Description
Assessment is a key element of organizational quality and sustainability. It allows us to think critically about our operations and programming and find ways that we might improve our services and administration for the betterment of the communities we serve. It allows us to evaluate older policies and procedures, generate and explore new options, and to ready ourselves for the unexpected. Assessment allows us, ultimately, to take a step back and make sure that our organizations are on the path that they should be. NAFCM developed this Community Mediation Center Self-Assessment Manual as a thorough guide to help both new and existing programs navigate the complex process of self-evaluation of their management, operations, and programs. This manual may be used in multiple evaluative contexts and can be equally useful in conducting a peer review of one center by another. Over time, it is our hope that this manual may provide a common framework and tool so that community centers can consult and work directly with other centers as well as NAFCM. Our intent is to recognize the great diversity within the community mediation field – and through NAFCM’s member roster – while also emphasizing what continually develop as smart practices within the field.

Building upon the NAFCM Quality Assurance Committee’s original work featured in the Manual’s 2002 edition, this Second Edition presents a number of exciting new features that enhance both the accessibility and utility of this extensive self-assessment manual. In this Second Edition, you will find over 220 new resources to assist you in assessing and enhancing your community mediation center. These new resources encompass the breadth of helpful materials now available to community mediation programs, including guidebooks and academic studies, webinars, online videos, recorded teleseminars, interviews, example forms, and practitioner articles. It is our hope that these resources will help inspire and inform reflective enhancements to your center’s operations and services; enhancements which ultimately benefit your staff, your volunteers, your service recipients, and your communities.
